2026 Declared the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.

While I found the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Given that a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Amphibians have been anything but new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. But, their popularity has markedly increased in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are legitimate titles centered on frogs.

A Data-Driven Dive

To understand this trend, I undertook a detailed review into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings tell a compelling story: a steady rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also visible elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the wave in gaming seems uniquely pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

In my opinion, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess built-in creative potential for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues enable a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.

Several the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year yet.

If these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be entering a true frog gaming renaissance.
