An Down Under young sportsman has tragically died after being hit by a cricket delivery during a training drill in the Australian city.
The teenage athlete was training in cricket cages in Ferntree Gully on the weekday when he was hit in the head or neck by a ball from an automatic bowling machine. It's believed he was using a helmet at the time of the accident.
First responders were called to the scene just prior to 17:00 local time and the young man was rushed to Monash Children's Hospital in critical condition. He was placed on medical support systems but succumbed to his injuries on the following day.
The teenager's local cricket club expressed they were "absolutely devastated" by the "untimely death" of one of their team members and that the youngster's death "will be felt by everyone in our sports family".
"I know how heavily this information will land across our local area and we will provide any and all support we can to our clubs and sports community," said the community sports leader.
In a online statement, the teenager's sports team extended their condolences to his family and close companions and "to everyone who knew him and the happiness that he provided".
"We ask you to please honor the personal space of the family during this difficult time," the post continued.
This tragedy happens just over a ten years after a previous national player died after being struck on the neck by a ball while batting in a domestic competition.
That earlier tragedy, for which investigators ultimately found no fault could be assigned, sparked improvements to safety equipment for those participating in the game.
The sports community continues to emphasize the importance of proper safety equipment and awareness during training sessions and competitive matches.
