Doris Secures Spot in Irish Squad But Joe McCarthy Omitted

Rugby squad selection news

Returning head coach the Ireland coach has included skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish roster for the fall Tests, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, recently returned to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be ready to face the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.

Second row Joe McCarthy, however, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions Test against Australia in the summer.

Northern province player Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash also miss out due to injury, while full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having a hip operation following the summer tour.

Leinster prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new player in the 34-man squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "backup".

After playing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous encounter, the team host Japan, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented the coach, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

In a mostly experienced squad, the Dublin club's Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will again vie for the first-choice fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is still available, as the two players poised to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming URC game at Croke Park.

Ciaran Frawley is the third fly-half chosen as Farrell deciding not to selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test victories over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran group of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the youngster is also a frontrunner to cover for the full-back at full-back.

Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and the Lobos.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Irish pack. The front rower has started two of Leinster's three league games so far and played in Ireland A's loss by the English in the English city earlier this year.

McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a international appearance.

Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while experienced Northern province second row Iain Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.

Conan, who started all three Lions matches during the tour, is set to cover for Doris if the skipper fails to recover fitness in time to face the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on Monday before flying to the US on Tuesday.
