AI-generated graphics purporting to depict Nicolás Maduro in custody following his apprehension by the United States have gained many millions of impressions across the internet.
Initial fabricated AI image apparently showing him taken off a aircraft emerged shortly after. The graphic was unpublished by any official government accounts; it was instead uploaded on the platform X by an profile describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.
Our analysis used the SynthID tool, determining the image was generated or edited with AI tools.
Additional synthetic images started circulating in the following hours, purporting to present more angles of the leader under guard. Noticeable identifying marks on these pictures indicate they originated from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
SynthID confirms all of these images were likewise generated or edited Google AI.
