Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team might be designing a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
